Diamonds have been a source of fascination for centuries. They are the hardest, the most imperishable and the most brilliant of all precious gem stones. The word “diamond” comes from the Greek word adamas, meaning “unconquerable”.
The first recorded history of the diamond dates back some 3,000 years to India, where diamonds were first valued for their ability to refract light. In those days, the diamond was used for personal adornment, and as talisman to ward off evil.
In the Middle Ages, diamonds were used for some time as medical aid. Many during that time believed that diamonds held in the hand while making a sign of the cross would heal wounds and cure illnesses. They were also thought to impact virtue, generosity and courage in battle. Diamonds were ingested in the hope of curing sickness. During the early Middle Ages, Pope Clement unsuccessfully used this treatment, so don’t try this at home.
For centuries men and woman have worn diamonds and given diamonds as a symbol of everlasting love and commitment. Diamonds are an amazing gemstone that due to their durability and meaning that accompanies them, they transcend generations.
The quality and value of diamonds are measured by four characteristics known as the 4C’s. The 4C’s relate to a diamond’s cut, color, clarity and carat weight. The quality of a diamond is measured by its cut, color and clarity.
The carat weight measures the Brilliance by Design By Bradley Gough size of the diamond. While the color and clarity of a diamond is determined by nature. The cut is determined by man. A diamond in its natural, uncut state is described as a “rough diamond”. Its natural appearance resembles a glass pebble that most people would pass by without a second glance. More than anything else, how a diamond is cut and polished is the determining factor on how much that diamond shows brilliance and fire. The skill of a master diamond cutter unlocks the hidden beauty of every gem quality diamond, which millions of years of heat and pressure have locked in. I have been in the jewelry business since I was eighteen years old.
I’ve bought and sold tens of thousands of diamonds over the years. Chances are you or one of your family members are wearing a diamond that I carefully hand selected for its combination of fire, cut, color, clarity and most important, exceptional value.
My experience had taught me that just the right combination of diamond grading parameters will result in the most visually beautiful diamond. Every Legacy Diamond is independently certified H or better in color, which means it does not look yellowish or dark. It has SI or better clarity, which means you will not see any or inclusions or blemishes without the aid of magnification.
Every Legacy Diamond is also certified ideal cut, but we go even further than that. I personally worked with our Israeli diamond cutters to make the specifications for this diamond so stringent that most certified ideal cut diamonds will not qualify to be a Legacy Diamond.
