Wii is Nintendo’s fifith home console and seventh generation in video games console. The primary competitors of Nintendo Games Wii are Microsoft XBOX 360 and Sony’s Play Station 3. But Wii is the sales leader of its generation. Wii is also the smallest and most compact system in its generation.
- Both PS 3 and XBOX 360 emphasize their impressive graphical capabilities. Wii downplays the importance of graphics on its new console.
- While Sony and Microsoft consoles keep the branding of their respective predecessors, the oddly named wii is a semantic departure from Nintendo’s more literally named 2001 console, the GameCube.

PS3 is much more expensive than the Xbox 360 because the Sony decided to include a Blu-ray drive on the system. The drive can play both Blu-ray movies and regular DVDs. The Xbox 360 comes with a DVD player and an HD-DVD add-on is planned. The Nintendo Wii uses a DVD drive; however, the system will not work for playback of movies, just Nintendo games.
The reason why Nintendo choose Wii for the name of Nintendo fifth home console is: Wii sounds like ‘we’, which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
A distinguishing feature of the Nintendo video games Wii console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detect movement in three dimensions. The Wii’s controller looks more like a TV remote control than a game controller. It can be held with just one hand, and uses technology that senses the player’s movements. Another distinctive feature of the console is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.
