Nintendo DS, DS lite, DSi
Nintendo DS systems code name was Nitro that can be seen in the model number that appear on the unit (NTR-001). The console’s name officially refers to “Developers’ System”, in reference to developers of new game designs the system was meant to inspire, and “Dual Screen”, the system’s most obvious and distinct feature.
The Nintendo DS has compatibility with support wireless IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) standards of technology which make the gamers can interact with each other within a short distance. The unit also supports a special wireless format created by Nintendo and secured using RSA security signing . Wi-Fi is used for accessing the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, where users can use the internet or compete with other users playing the same Wi-Fi compatible game.
The amazing Nintendo DS video game console uses a proprietary solid state ROM which is called “game card”. It resembles with the memory cards which are used in other portable electronic devices, such as in digital cameras. The main menu Nintendo DS game system presents the player with four main options to select: play a DS game, use PictoChat, initiate DS Download Play, or play a Game Boy Advance game. It also offers plenty of highly useful features to the users, like an alarm clock, several options for customisation and the option to input user’s personal information such as name, birthday, favourite colour, etc.
The Nintendo DS contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 850 mAH. On a full four-hour charge, the factory 850 mAH battery lasts about 10 hours. The battery is designed to be removed only when it expires.
The Nintendo DS system has 656 kilobytes of video memory and two 2D engines (one per screen). These are similar to (but more powerful than) the Game Boy Advance’s single 2D engine; however, the cores are divided into the main core and sub core. Only the main core is capable of vertex 3D rendering.
Nintendo DS Lite console is a slimmer, more lightweight redesign of the original Nintendo DS model. The features and capabilities Nintendo DS Lite systems are the same as the original style DS, but the DS Lite has four levels of LCD screen brightness. The LED battery and charging light indicators have been moved to the upper right-hand corner of the unit, making it viewable regardless of whether the system is open or closed.
Nintendo DSi is the third iteration of Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DSi is thinner than the Nintendo DS Lite. The new handheld has two VGA (0.3 megapixel) digital cameras; one on the internal hinge pointed towards the user and the second one in the outer shell. It also has larger screens and improved speakers. The power switch has been replaced with a power button, now located next to the bottom left side of the touchscreen.
The DSi has five brightness settings compared to the Nintendo DS Lite’s four; however, battery life is reduced to 14 hours on the lowest brightness setting compared to the 19 hours of its predecessor. The internal rechargeable battery can still be replaced by the user at the end of its useful life of (typically) several hundred charge/discharge cycles.
A new SD card slot is used for external storage of pictures and downloaded software and to play AAC audio. The DSi has 256 MB of internal flash memory. Photos taken using the DSi can be synced to the Wii’s Photo Channel.
