The newly released DSi Console has been well received amongst the die-hard/loyal Nintendo gamer fans. With its sleek/classy Matte Black or White finish the DSi looks like it is aimed more towards the ‘grown up’ market. In fact most of the TV adverts have been showing an older generation of gamer, so Nintendo have really spread their marketing net a lot wider now.
But for those who have played with the older DS Games and the more cent DS lite is there really good reason to upgrade to the new DSi? Well for a start the DSi has a larger screen. And of course the bigger the screen the brighter it’s likley to be, which the DSi is, and the longer you can get to play your favourite games without getting eye strain. But the screen is not ‘massively’ bigger so not convinced that the ‘increased’ screen size is a good enough reason to upgrade.
And then there is the addition of 2 small cameras. At first glance it looks very ‘gimmicky’ and that it’s just something Nintendo though of to justify the release of yet another version of their most popular handheld game. But, the 2 cameras do give the Nintendo DSi Console a certain amount of ‘fun factor’ in that you can play around with your friends taking pictures and using the on-board photo manipulation software to pull and stretch the image, amongst other things. It does allow you to have a certain amount of fun but I’m not sure how much this will be used after the initial novelty period. However, it does work well and the software is pretty stable too.
A big step up for the DSi is the ability to download games on the move. Although there are not many DSi dedicated titles on release yet the games library will be well and truly stocked come the end of 2009, just in time for the festive season. the DSi is now up against the likes of the Sony PSP when it comes to games download. But it is also up against the legions of Nintendo DS and DS Lite fans who used the GBA (Game Boy Advanced) games cartridge, which doesn’t exist on the DSi. Lots of the old school gamers will not be too impressed with this but then again their trusty DS and DS Lite will still play them so that little games mismatch shouldn’t cause too many tears.
Overall the new DSi is a grown up replacement for the DS and DS Lite when it comes to pure looks and handling. The White or DSi Black Matte finish on the DSi is much more ‘tacky’ which means you can grip the console more easily, which also means you can play for longer periods and not end up with sore thumbs or fingers.
The screen advancements may not be enough to convince DS or DS Lite users to splash out on the DSi but I suspect many will do so to ensure they have the full range of Nintendo handheld consoles in their collection.
